Stories Carved in Stone
Ancient petroglyphs cover the dark desert-varnished face of a sandstone boulder at Puerco Pueblo in Arizona’s Petrified Forest National Park. Human-like figures, geometric forms, and other mysterious symbols remain etched into the rock, surrounded by the rugged stone and sparse vegetation of the high desert. Created centuries ago, these markings preserve a remarkable visual connection to the Ancestral Puebloan people who once lived in and traveled through this landscape.
