Ancient Petrified Log in the Painted Desert
A massive petrified log rests in the foreground of this striking desert landscape within Petrified Forest National Park in northeastern Arizona. Captured beneath the bright midday sun, the richly colored fossilized wood contrasts beautifully with the pastel badlands and rugged mesas of the Painted Desert beyond. Once living trees over 200 million years ago during the Late Triassic Period, these ancient logs were gradually transformed into stone as minerals replaced the original wood, preserving remarkable textures and vibrant colors. Today, the park protects one of the world's largest concentrations of petrified wood, offering a fascinating glimpse into Earth's prehistoric past.
